Woodturning all about revolution and evolution
4th February
Niagara-on-the-Lake artist Peter Rand says much like life, the art of woodturning is constantly evolving.

"Actually, it's revolution and evolution," Rand joked. "It is unlike any other medium out there. But like other mediums, it constantly changes. A lot has changed in 20 years."

That's how long Rand has been a practising woodturner, which sees him carving wooden art with tools while it spins on a lathe. Woodturning has led Rand to create a variety of works, including bowls, sculptures and decorations.

And to think, Rand never thought about pursuing it as a career.

Rand had spent most of his life working as a research scientist with a gig at Brock University. After retiring, Rand became inspired by woodturning, an artform he had seen while visiting England in the early 1980s.

By the 1990s, Rand had picked up woodturning as a weekend hobby but has since turned into his professional trade.

"It's a kinetic art that is like an enigma," Rand said. "There's an attraction to it. A lot certainly has changed over 20 years. Woodturning used to be about things that were 'round and brown.' You would produce a bowl, platter or a vase. Now you can make anything."

Rand said the artform was once classified as a hobby for oldtimers, but it has since grown to be something adopted by artists of all walks of life.

Rand will be the featured speaker Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. at the Niagara Pumphouse where he will be discussing his woodturning experience. Rand will also be showcasing examples of his work.

The lecture is open to members of the Niagara Pumphouse. For those interested in joining the Pumphouse, call 905-468-5455 or visit
